Theme: Look for the Light. Challenge: Painting. Not my favorite of our light painting sessions, but still fun and different. This time we couldn't find the finger-tip lasers we normally use so we were forced to use a lowly glow stick. My son was the painter in this one.

Today's challenge: "Glow". I've tried this once before and I was not as successful with it as I was this time. Trying to get a light bulb filament glowing as it cools off is a fun little project with really interesting results.

Today's challenge: Hanging. I love this photo and I was really happy with my idea for this shot. My son was a trooper, too, as we are experiencing a bit of a cold snap... and he really doesn't like playing on the rings on a nice day.

No challenge today. I brought home flowers. My favorites, irises. I think I like the cropped version better than the full size. And color vs. b&w...? I just don't know. I think color, though. Although the b&w is cool.

Challenge: Escape from the ordinary. As usual for a week day, I was low on time and inspiration today so I did something easy and not terribly interesting. This is a macro of a king conch shell I brought back from Turks and Caicos.

Today I submit my safety shot. The day got away from me and these are just some oil lamps on my patio, waiting to be cleaned off and filled for the season. I couldn't decide between the color and b&w.

I didn't opt for a challenge today. The day itself was enough of a challenge. Horrible. Just horrible day. At least I got out my camera and did my photo.

Challenge: Weather. Beautiful sunny day today. Mid-fifties. Kind of boring in terms of trying to shoot weather. I'm taking a little liberty with this one and I submit a seasonal photo. We just wrapped up winter, now it's construction season. My attempt at photographic humor. As you judge my comedic talent (or lack thereof), please keep in mind I am an engineer by trade. Not a comedian. There's a reason for that.

Challenge: Step outside. I guess this counts. I got up and went to shoot the sunrise this morning. It was overcast, but still pretty. I love the drama the ultra-wide angle lens adds to this shot.

I did not do a challenge today - I got to borrow an ultra-wide angle lens from work so I had some fun trying it out. Went into town with my son to do some shooting at Colonial Williamsburg. I took several photos, but this is my favorite. I think it's because of the perspective and I really like the black and white.

Challenge: Stitched. So, in my medicated state last night, I accidentally did today's challenge (polka dots) yesterday. Oh well. This photo was taken today with yesterday's theme. This is a section of some needlework I did 10 years ago, while I was pregnant with my son. It's part of his birth sampler.

Challenge: Polka Dots. The best thing I can say about this photo is that I got it done. I'm sick today and the last thing I felt like doing was picking up my camera, taking a photo, and then blogging about it. I even got out the extension tube. That's dedication, right there.

Today's challenge: Patterns. I do not love this photo, but it's one of the better textural macro shots I got over the weekend. This is from a woven table runner I have in my dining room. My favorite photo for today is the close-up (also macro) of my son's eye. Which, I guess could fit the pattern challenge as well if you consider his iris.

Pi day. So I didn't shoot anything that would work for Pi day. But, I have a fancy, red stripe macro lens at my disposal for the weekend so it's going to be all things tiny and up close. I have been having a blast with this lens. I must get one. It's simply awesome. Today's shot is in honor of spring and St. Patrick's Day - a beautiful, fresh yellow tulip with water droplets reflecting clovers. We're doing our Irish food tonight since it will be impossible for me to pull off corned beef and cabbage with Irish soda bread during the work week. Have another Irish Red Ale...? Why yes, I believe I will.

Irish blessing. I got to borrow an awesome macro lens from work for the weekend. This is only the beginning! This was close-up of a gift from some good friends, and I honestly don't remember if it was an engagement or wedding gift (I think engagement, though). It was 12 years ago... and I can't remember yesterday.

I knew there would be days when I had little time, inspiration or desire to make a photo. Today was one of those days. But, I still did it. I got my camera out and did my photo of the day. And the best part is I actually like it. I don't love it, but I like it.

Pinewood Derby. My son picked the last photo (him holding his car), but I really wanted to include the other two. The first is his car "Venom" in the pit - #58. The second is the post-race consolation/plotting for next year talk.

Wow I had a hard time figuring out which photo to post for today! I'm submitting a few... The first two were early morning, just as the light hit the frost on the leaves. I wanted to post something green, even if it had frost on it, but I really like the b&w better.

The shot below is from an ice skating birthday party to which my son was invited. When I saw the invite, I was excited and really wanted to try some longer shutter speed photography so I could get motion blur. Well, I did try it but I don't love the shot. Couldn't use a tripod so I did the best I could given the circumstances. Frankly, it just doesn't do much for me - I think a constant stream of skaters would have turned out better, but I did not have the opportunity. I will try this technique again with headlights at night. And a tripod.

The shot I love from the party is this one. The birthday girl with one of her gifts, a selfie stick. It's a little grainy (super high ISO so I could have a decent shutter speed), but I love the story it tells.

Venom. This weekend is all about the Pinewood Derby. This is the first year my son chose to paint his car something other than bright, Caribbean colors. He wanted it black with a cobra. It's not easy to get a 9-year-old to stand still for very long while holding a 1/2 pound object (also still) out in front of him. Just sayin'. I got four pics before he lost his mind. This was the best of the bunch.

Peace. Today is the 11th anniversary of my mom's passing. I struggled with what to shoot today... and with a huge lack of time to do it. I wanted to do something thoughtful and I had about 10 minutes to get it done. This bear is the only thing my son has from my mom. She made it for her future grandchild, not knowing if she'd ever have any and knowing that she would never meet them. The chair belonged to my mom's mom. She embroidered the seat cover. As it's well over 30 years old, so it's a little worn.

I have decided that for the remainder of March, I am going to try to shoot as much green as possible. I'm sick to death of all things brown, grey and snow-covered. A sure sign spring is coming... asparagus is in season again.

Challenge: Green. As winter continues to slap us in the face (another winter weather advisory issued for today and snow predicted for later in the week - UGH), I submit something green-ish. What I like about this photo is the contrast of these elements. Green seaglass I collected on various beaches in the Caribbean, and snow. Happy March. Hope it's a warm one... And enough with the snow already!
